Rear-facing child car seats

Anna is mother to 11-month-old Pauline. At the baby swimming course they attend, the transition from infant carrier to child car seat is a topic of increasing discussion. While under the shower, Anna’s friend Miriam tells her that she and her husband are probably going to buy arear-facing car seat made by the Scandinavian manufacturer BeSafe: “In a rear-facing seat, Pauline would look away from the direction of travel, like in an infant carrier, which means she would be better protected in the event of an accident than in a forward-facing model. But she would still be able to see what was going on outside through the side and rear windows, just as if she were sitting in a conventional seat.” Anna listens attentively, as it is not long since she read about a car seat fitted with the Isofix system: The rear-facing seat can be anchored to existing connectors on the back seat, and some models can also be installed facing forwards.

Which seat shall we choose for Pauline?

That evening, as Pauline sleeps peacefully in her cot, Pauline and her husband Thomas happen to see a report on TV about the frequency with which children are injured in car accidents. A journalist is just explaining: “In Germany, the number of 1 to 2-year-olds injured is far higher than the number of injured children under the age of 12 months. No such trend is observed in Sweden, where children up to the age of 36 months have to be transported by law in rear-facing car seats. In Germany, on the other hand, many parents switch over to forward-facing seats when their child is one year old.” The program goes on to explain that the muscles at the back of the neck of 1 to 2-year-olds are often only weak and that in the case of a rear-end collision the child’s head is often jerked forwards unchecked if the child is sitting in a forward-facing seat. Thomas immediately gets out his laptop, and together the couple set about scouring the Internet for rear-facing car seats belonging to the Groups 0+/1: They find various rear-facing models from manufacturers such as BeSafe, some of which are fitted with the Isofix system. Thomas discovers: “In the case of this rear-facing seat, the 5-point belt and headrest can be adjusted to 10 different positions, which means the seat will practically “grow” with Pauline!”
