When looking for a new car seat, Christina and Mark came across the new i-Size permission which is supposed to replace the old ECE-R44 standard in the future. They were irritated by the new regulation and insecure about their purchase decision. Do we compulsory need an i-Size car seat? Are we even allowed to use our old car seat? During their research they came upon a lot of, partly confusing comments. To help advice seeking parents like Christina and Mark, we took a closer look on the theme i-Size car seats and give you answers to the most important questions.
i-Size is the new ECE safety regulation for child car seats. At the moment it consists additionally of the old ECE-R44. That is the reason why there are currently car seats on the market, according both to ECE-R44 and new i-Size regulation. In the long term the old regulation is supposed to the replaced, however, an exact date is not determined. There is just a proposal to only permit i-Size car seats as of 2018.
Even if these tests have been carried out by ADAC and Stiftung Warentest (leading German consumer safety group) for more than 10 years, it will be compulsory for the first time to carry out such a test for i-Size car seats. With that the long lasting demand of the ADAC is legally anchored.
Until now you had to choose your car seat on the basis of the weight of your child. Through that it was possible to happen that you had to switch to a bigger seat too soon, thus the maximum of safety was not provided anymore. With the adjustment to choose a car seat by the means of the size, a seat can be picked more accurate.
According to the statistics most of the accidents are head-on collisions. By transporting your child rear-faced, all the forces spread over the complete back of your child. Thus head and neck have to stand up less. Especially that is safer for your small passenger. The head does still make 25 percent of the total weight.
The new regulations define an area in which the support leg is supposed to stand and which it has to cover. A list of types does not have to be attached anymore if the seat has the mark “suitable for i-Size”. To get this mark the bottom of the vehicle has to be stable enough to carry the load of the support leg in case of an accident.
STAGE 1
(2013)
New regulation for integral Isofix child car seats of the previous groups 0, 0+ and I
STAGE 2
(2016)
New regulation for non-integral car seats of the previous groups II and III
STAGE 3
(2017)
New regulation for integral car seats which need to be fixed with the seat belt
A car seat which has been installed incorrectly does not provide any protection. More than 70 percent of parents have problems when installing the car seat with a normal seat belt. ISOFIX minimized the danger of installation faults. The corresponding anchorage points are prescribed for all vehicles on the outer seats on the back seat since 2004. To get the new permission, ISOFIX will also be compulsory for child car seats.
As of 2018, only car seats with the new i-Size standard are supposed to be allowed. A use ban for the ECE R44 car seats is currently not planned. An immediate change to i-Size is not necessary.
With the introduction of the new i-Size regulation, the legal demands for child car seats will be increased. The side impaction test which has been required for a long time by ADAC and Stiftung Warentest is now prescribed for the new standard. It will also get easier for the consumer if car seats only have to be fixed with ISOFIX. And the no longer necessary lists for types since every seat will fit into every new car.
