Most parents start to think about sand toys when their child is spending a lot of time in a sandbox. Relatively late, they then discover which variety is offered. Besides the classic toys such as bucket, watering can and moulds, there is a lot more on the market in all shapes, colours and sizes, arranged according to themes and equipped with extension sets. The question arises quickly then: Which toys are suitable for which age? And what should safety-conscious parents put emphasis on? More information >
Bucket, shovel and moulds are counted as the most typical sand toys. They are suitable for toddlers aged one year, however, basically also for older children. This basic equipment will support your little one’s creativity. Build grand castles or burrow tunnels under half of the playground? Create a race path for toy cars, a kingdom or an ant town? All these things won’t be a problem and the sand toys by well-known brands like Haba are loyal helpers in implementing these. The typical items can be expanded by moulds, buckets, spades and ladles. Everyday life objects such as empty cups, spoons or plastic foil can also be used in the sandbox.
The most beautiful and best basic equipment is of little value if the sand is rather fine and dry. Though it feels good between the naked toes, it is not appropriate for playing and building. Remedy can be found through toys which bring the element water to the sandbox. The most typical toy for that is the watering can which is available in all sizes and colours, plainly designed or colourful decorated with caps. It is both suitable for little builders and ambitious sand architects. A water pump does not only bring water to a sandbox and provides perfect conditions; it also supports a child’s technical comprehension and makes for astonished faces. Alternatively it is also possible to let the water flow through a self-built canal to the sand – or with a waterway set. Toys like a sand-water-mill will fascinate little discoverers. Older children will use this toy to water single areas of the sand – or for building traps and clever constructions.
Colour and theme-coordinated toy sets for the sandbox have become a big trend in the past few years. They are most often made of plastic and fascinate boys and girls of every age. The most popular models are e.g. the sets by Haba with moulds for baking and cooking, but also ice-cream cones, shells, cars, sand monsters and flowers. The sets can be extended most often with moulds in the same style. Thus boredom is a foreign word.
Especially suitable for older children are bigger sand toys such as a sand digger. The bigger copies are operated like a real digger, as the “digger driver” sits on a seat. This toy requires a high degree of coordination skills, capability of abstraction and skill which can usually not be found in toddlers. That is why the toys are rather suitable for older kindergarten or school children. Also dumper trucks and pushcarts are a lot of fun in a sandbox – both for school children and toddlers. However, what if there is no sandbox? No problem, there are different boxes and clams in all different shapes and sizes available on the market. A sand-water play station can also replace the sandbox in case of necessity and can even be placed on little terraces and balconies.
Sand toys are in most cases made of colourful plastic. That sounds less ecology-minded and sustainable, however, the plenty colours and shapes unite some important advantages. Their happy colours, different patterns and varying surface structures stimulate children’s fantasy and encourage toddlers to play and discover. Furthermore they are impassible to kicks and hits, heat and cold. As a sand toy made of plastic, it is washable, waterproof and not too complicated to assemble and thus suitable for every way of playing and every kind of sand. Not all parents do like the idea of letting their children play with toys made of plastics. However, alternatively you can find toys made of panel sheets or rather metal or wood. Irrespective of the material, the choice for these toys needs to be made according to:
