Babies are fascinated by their surroundings from day one. A lot of new impressions need to be processed every single day. With every day and every new step in development, the understanding of the world increases and children take their place in it. Books can be a help to support their individual development – not only in the respect of their linguistic development; provided that you choose a book which is appropriate for the age and particular phase of development. A baby does naturally not have a text comprehension so why should they be occupied with books? It’s as simple as that: books will give your little ones more than entertaining texts. They are made of cardboard, paper, cloth and synthetic materials and invite to be astonished and discover with all senses – literally! Books for the smallest of us are drafted in a way that they can chew on them and grab. They offer a high extent of entertainment, excitement, fun and variety, both at home and while travelling. Furthermore a book supplies even more than that:
Furthermore, children can find it very pleasant to hear a story and look at books. During this time, parents take time for their children and deliver near and a feeling of security which has a positive effect to the development of your child – and be the reason for your child to love books forevermore.
It is especially exciting for older children to listen to a story and getting to know new characters. However, that does not mean that it is not worth to buy a book for a baby. For them a book is rather a toy, which is, however, also an important cornerstone. Even the littlest ones love rhymes and melodies which can often be found in books. In other words: There is no minimum age for children books. They can accompany you from birth on and in every step in development.
If a baby can be intrigued by a book, depends significantly on the themes. In other words: Only exemplars which are drafted and illustrated appropriate for the age, are suitable. The first high-contrast picture books are available commercially for newborns and babies aged three months at least. Also touch books and exemplars with toys, chains, mirrors and other exciting extras are popular. Parents of children aged three and six months should use touch and picture books with easy, high-contrast illustrations. As soon as your child is nine months old, interactive games, colours as well as dictionaries and rhymes will become interesting. It will be time for the first words and even if your child is not talking yet – his treasury of words is trained and expanded every single day. In the transition time from being a baby to becoming a toddler, your little one will start to understand stories, approximately around the 12th month of age. The time for the first paperboard books has come, which explain everyday situations and help to understand the world a bit better.
Books should not be a safety risk for children, which is why parents should place emphasis on the stability and tear strength, but handy and concrete and the same time. It should have rounded edges which can easily wiped clean and are illustrated appropriate for children and the development of them. Parents should also test if the toys included are properly fixed and are not an additional source of danger. If the book is free from toxic substances, toxic colours, irritant substances and BPA, it can be used without hesitation and is recommendable for the littlest ones.
